Written by Tim and Judith Power, Watch the Cornfields is ideal for primary school singers. It can be used in a classroom music setting, in assembly, harvest festival or as a choir item.
The song is written in a 3/4 time with the intention of using a folk style soundscape. To achieve this, we used sample libraries from Spitfire Audio (Albion Solstice - Elders Strings and Gut Circle Acoustic fretted instruments: nylon stringed guitars and mandolins) and The Crowhill Company (Pocket Strings - an amazing FREE product).
Watching the Cornfields celebrates the traditional farming season of Harvest where 'all is gathered in'.
The structure of the song is simple: Introduction - Verse 1 - Verse 2 - Chorus - Introduction 2 - Verse 3 - Verse 4 - Chorus - CODA (ending.) We used a simple, repetitive melody over a
D major based chord structure. For added interest we used major 9th and 7th chords. The chorus is written in G minor where some drum kit and electric piano are added: the folk feel still prevails.
The song can be sung using the voice 1 part - everybody would sing in unison.
There is challenge built into the song to stretch your older pupils or more experienced singers. Verse 2 and 4 have an optional second part. This continues into each chorus with an added third (descant) vocal part - again adding challenge and texture.
