Goldilocks and the Three Bears
An interactive musical based on the famous traditional tale
specially written for EYFS and Y1 children.

" A fairy-tale heroine (?) who enters the house of The Three Bears and delares the possessions of Baby Bear to be 'just right' (Discuss)
An ideal, brilliant, engaging story for EYFS and Y1 children. Following the success of two World Book Day events in 2021 and 2024 for Greater Manchester Music Hub we decided to create a similar interactive resource for EYFS and Y1.
Goldilocks and the Three Bears is made up of nine songs:
Goldilocks, Goldilocks
Knock, Knock, Knock
Just right to eat
The chair is just right
The first bed is large
What's this?
Oh no!
Don't cry little girl
Everybody's Friends
These songs are supported by underscore music to cover narrations (all of which are included in a script for the show and in mp3 tracks).
Big decisions had to be made in terms of what would the soundscape be like for this music. After all, what does Golcilocks and The Three Bears sound like? Explored lots of ideas in terms of style of songs but in the end went quite traditional: Flute, Trumpet in Bb, Cello (lovely for bass lines and melody lines alike), Piano and Percussion (glock, xylophone djembe in 3 parts).

We created songs that had distinctive themes and motifs for the characters and locations in the story. For example, Just right to eat, The chair is just right and The first bed is large all share the same chordal pattern. Also, Knock, knock, knock has lots of repetition and words like knock, rat a tat tat, thud . . .lots of opportunity for actions and movement (imagine you're knocking on the door of the house). There are opportunities where half your group could be singing the words and the other half could be chanting the 'sound words' (see the picture above). This can be developed further where the children clap the rhythms to these 'sound words' or play them on instruments.
The resource is available on the website comprising Performance Tracks, Rehearsal Tracks, Narration Tracks, PDF Full Scores for each song and underscore, PDF Piano/Vocal Scores for each song, Script
